Domingo applied the phrase to Angel Joy Blue, an exciting young soprano with a big luscious voice, an instinct for the stage, and dazzlingly photogenic looks. (She even used beauty-contest winnings to fund her operatic studies). On the strength of her enjoyable new disc she isn't the next Price yet, but she does have the potential to become an A-list star. The highlights? A sultry account of Gershwin's Summertime ; an ecstatic performance of Rachmaninov's Spring Waters' with thrillingly expansive top notes; and a dreamily languorous version of Liszt's When I sleep . The variety is staggering too jazz, gospel, tango, spirituals, Lieder, zarzuela, five languages and Iain Burnside's accompanying is terrific.
