The LD50 determination was orginally devised in 1927 as a measure of acute toxicity and lethality for the standardisation and comparison of cerain highly active, naturally occurring substances such as insluin and digitalis. Since that time it has become widely used as a means of providing a standardised measure of acute toxicity which is used as a basis for the classification of the potential hazards of chemicals and pesticides and as a starting point for the safety evaluation of pharmaceuticals and other products.
