Jarrett had given notice when 'Inside Out' was released last year that there would be "more of this kind of thing in the near future." Accordingly, there are no standards on this new double album, recorded on two nights in Tokyo last year, but it's an endlessly fascinating document that takes the full measure of the group's exceptional creativity. Keith Jarrett describes the work as "free music that was not written rehearsed or planned in advance of the performances." But Jarrett's free music embraces an enormous range of possibilities. There is an abundance of melody in these spontaneous constructions, and passing allusions to the entire history of jazz, though the music also reaches beyond it. There are cascades of sound, tremulous lyrical passages, deep grooves, wide-ranging dynamics, silences, and quiet dissonances. The range of possible references in this music runs from Thelonious Monk to Anton Webern. The music couldn't have been played by anyone but Jarrett's trio, yet they have never sounded quite like this. Keith himself has described the music as "a volcanic eruption" and feels it is their best and most concentrated work to date. The solo improvisation "The River" is as lovely as anything on 'The Köln Concert'. Japanese audiences have always been particularly receptive to Jarrett's music and inspired him to exceptional performances - the epochal 'Sun Bear Concerts', 'Personal Mountains', 'Tokyo 96' - and so it is here. 'Inside Out', the recording of Jarrett's last London concert which ended up on numerous critics best-of-the-year lists in 2001, set the tone for the trio's immersion in free playing - but 'Always Let Me Go' is a big step beyond it, a real creative advance. All in all, this is a fine representation of the band working at its highest creative level. Whereas many groups travel the same old paths after years of working together, this trio rightly chooses new ones, using its long-running trust and familiarity to set off in search of the new and revel in its vibrancy. --Tad HendricksonReviewWhile Keith Jarrett's recent :rarum compilation for ECM served as a timely reminder of just how eclectic and brilliant he can be, it highlighted the fact that the Standards Trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette (his main vehicle for the last 20 years) has ploughed a straighter, if not narrower path. Despite the fact that much of the music produced was brilliant, it became increasingly difficult to escape the feeling that Jarrett was surrounding the trio with a lot of historical baggage, almost setting them up as a kind of platonic ideal of the piano trio, to be preserved in aspic at the Smithsonian Institute (that's not a literal suggestion, before anyone suggests Damien Hirst for the job). That all changed with Inside Out, a record which contained a fair amount of completely improvised material. Jarrett promised that there would be more to follow and here it is; two nights in Tokyo (almost home turf for the pianist) result in two hours of music over a double CD.
