Mozart - Le Nozze di FigaroOpis:The re-issue of this recording of Mozart's great comic opera "The Marriage of Figaro" is of particular significance as the original release marked the international debut of the renowned conductor Peter Maag. The cast features many of the great operatic performers of the period. "The Marriage of Figaro" (Le Nozze di Figaro) is based on a play by Beaumarchais, a sequel to one of his earlier plays "The Barber of Seville" which was later to become a major operatic hit for the Italian composer Rossini. In the first story which is set in a castle in Seville in the late 18th Century Count Almaviva, aided and abetted by his wily barber Figaro, wooed and won the lovely Rosine away from her crusty old ward and would-be husband, Dr. Bartholo. In "The Marriage of Figaro" we find the Count has married Rosine but their marriage has gone sour due to his philandering. Figaro has quit barbering and is now the Count's top manservant. He is engaged to Suzanne, who is Countess Rosine's maid, and the Count's intended conquest. Old Bartholo has also returned and is seeking revenge on Figaro for taking Rosine away from him. Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte, took this popular play, removed "political" content that would have offended the Viennese imperial censors (the French Revolution was only a few years away), and faithfully translated the rest into Italian, the customary opera language of the day. With Mozart's masterpiece of a score, the result was a witty yet profound tale of love, betrayal, and forgiveness.
