Recorded 1999 Personnel: Gianluigi Trovesi - (clarinets) Gianni Coscia - (accordion)Clarinettist Trovesi and accordionist Coscia grew up, friends, in towns on either side of Milan. Both musicians played jazz--Coscia accompanying visiting American stars from as early as the 1950s, Trovesi involving himself in virtually every type of music, from Italian folk to the jazz avant-garde. In Cerca di Cibo is an exceptionally seductive exploration of their common ground: tunes by Italian composers Fiorenzo Carpi and Luis Bacalov, jazz improvisation, characterful original works with space for improvisation. The Carpi compositions--packed with Mediterranean melancholy ("Geppetto" in particular is two minutes of unbelievable, almost unbearable, beauty) stand out. Trovesi's tunes include the playful "Villanella", extrovert "Minor Dance"; Coscia's the pretty, antique waltz (with surprises) "Le giostre di Piazza Savona".
